I just read this article and realized it was more than a week old. It’s still important though, so here goes. According to the article, a person mailed Steve Jobs about wireless syncing of the iPhone with iTunes. Steve replied: “Yep, someday.”

Wireless syncing on the iPad (or iPhone) can already be done via a Jailbreak app (I’ll post a How To article about that tomorrow). Let’s hope we don’t have to wait till iOS 5 till we can officially/legally sync our iOS devices over WiFi. Could be a good addition to the iPad release of iOS 4 later this year.

The other video shows FaceTime. The new way of making video calls. With the 5 megapixel camera and the front-facing VGA camera it is now possible to make a call and switch to a video call with a simple tap. Another tap and you switch from the front camera to the 5 megapixel camera on the back. A beautiful way of showing yourself to your friends and family.

Today’s keynote started at 10 a.m. at the Moscone Center to kick-off the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC). Steve Jobs presented the new iPhone after first announcing some numbers about sales of the iPhone, the iPod touch and the iPad. The thing where people came for is ofcourse the iPhone. As is tradition lately, every year, somewhere in June, Apple shows us a new version of the iPhone. This year they introduce the iPhone 4.

iPhone 4 Design

The iPhone 4 has a completely new design. It comes in black or white, just the usual. But it has a stainless steel band, which functions not only as the phone’s antennas, the band also provides structural rigidity. The volume buttons are now separate plus and minus buttons. And there is the microphone, headphone jack, speakers, 30-pin connector.

The new feature is that iPhone 4 has dual-mic instead of only one. One mic is at the bottom and the other is right next to the headphone jack. This secondary mic is used to cancel background noise so you can have a clear and silent conversation.

iPhone 4 also has a new processor chip. The iPad offers an A4 processor chip and the iPhone uses the same A4 processor technology but pushed on an even smaller chip. This makes the iPhone 4 a fast mobile phone capable of smoothly executing tasks like multitasking, video editing, and placing FaceTime calls.

The battery is the largest component of the iPhone. It is designed to provide 40% more power. The talk time will go up to 7 hours on 3G and 14 hours on 2G. The Internet use will go up to 6 hours on 3G and up to 10 hours on Wi-Fi. The battery will last up to 10 hours while playing video and up to 40 hours when playing music. In other words: an impressive improvement.

New Camera System

The iPhone 4 has two camera’s and both of them are impressive. The normal camera on the back is now a 5 megapixel camera which produces sharp and crysp pictures. The exciting part is the fact it offers LED flash. So even in the dark, making pictures is fun. When you look on the front you’ll notice another camera. The front-facing camera is used for video calls. This features is called FaceTime and can be utilized in many ways. Click “FaceTime” to see FaceTime in action.

Just call someone and tap the FaceTime button to start video-chatting with each other. And with a simple tap you can switch between both the front camera and the one on the back. The FaceTime feature only seems to work on Wi-Fi. Apple will have to make deals with providers to offer 3G video calls.

The Retina Display

This technology allows for better and much sharper display of pictures, video and text. The pixel density is so high, your eyes won’t even be able to distinguish individual pixels. This is what they call a Retina Display. The new 3.5-inch display has 4 times the number of pixels per inch. The ppi is now at a stunning 326. The contrast ratio is also 4 times higher, meaning every single color is just much brighter then you’re used to with previous iPhone models.

The iPhone 4 also offers IPS, the same technology used in the Apple LED Cinema Display and iPad. To top it all off, the glass of the screen is made of the same material used in trains and helicopters. It’s harder, more durable, more scratch resistant and even more flexible.

Video Recording And iMovie

The 5 megapixel camera has become something you’ll use more often then a normal digital camera. Since a phone (in this the iPhone) will be with all the time, it’s a perfect device to use for making pictures. But what’s even cooler is the fact it can now shoot video in high definition. Even in dark environments you can still make perfectly smooth videos.

After making a video you may want to edit it a little. Making the clip shorter for instance. But with iPhone 4 comes a brilliant new piece of software: iMovie for iPhone. The application will soon be available for just $4,99 and offers features like adding themes and transitions. It’s designed for multi-touch and offers you the possibility to also add photos and music.

As far as the information on Apple’s pages goes, it seems the iMovie app is only available for iPhone 4. No word on iMovie for 3GS or previous models.

Gyroscope

According to Apple the iPhone 4 is the first phone with a built-in three-axis gyroscope. This new sensor is capable of sensing advanced motions. It can now ‘feel’ when you’re moving forward or backwards, or up or down. This allows for a better gaming experience and people will probably come up with some interesting new applications.

Ten hours of video playback? And 140 hours of music playback? On a single charge? Sounds impossible for a device like the iPad, but Steve Jobs said that’s possible during his keynote (and later to Walt Mossberg). Since it has been a few weeks since we’ve heard some real news about the iPad, GCN emailed Steve to ask him for a confirmation of the previously mentioned claims.

He said:

“… yes, we are getting 10 hours in 1.5 pounds.”

And right at the bottom of the mail it said:

“Sent from my iPad.”

The Swedish website Slashat.se also sent an email to Jobs asking him if the Wi-Fi-only version will somehow support tethering thru the iPhone. Steve replied with a simple “no” sent from his iPhone. These personal responses are powerful signs. The answers seem more reliable and Steve sets a good example for his company.

Now, I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on the iPad to test the battery capacity.

It may not be easy to convince people to buy the iPad as an e-book reader, but it might get easier when people find out there’s an official authorized biography of Steve Jobs in the iBook Store. Normally Steve Jobs won’t allow such things. A few years ago Steve tried to prevent iCon from publishing a writing about him but failed. The result was Steve removing all books from Wiley & Sons from the Apple Store.

It now seems Steve has agreed with a biography. Walter Isaacson from Time Magazine is going to write the authorized biography. The biography will deal with the entire life of Steve Jobs. It starts with his youth and goes all the way to the two careers he had at Apple.

Apple and the author are not willing to confirm the biography about Jobs, but it seems likely. Isaacson has made biographies about Einstein and Benjamin Franklin and also published books at Simon & Schluster. The last named publisher is also one of the publishers to cooperate on the iBook Store. It can still take a while before the book is available, the books seems to be in an early stage of development.

Will Apple make profit with the iPad? Don’t worry, they’ll make a lot of profit. When the iPad starts sales in one and a half months from now, Steve Jobs will earn several hundreds of dollars with each iPad being sold. According to iSuppli Apple only has to pay $229.35 for the components used in each iPad.

“The most profitable of the six iPads is the 32-gigabyte version with 3G network access, Sideco says. Its combined materials and manufacturing cost of $287.15 amount to 39.4% of the retail price. The least profitable is the 16-gigabyte non-3G version, which sells for $499. Its combined costs amount to $229.35 or 46% of the retail price, leaving the slimmest potential profit margin of the six.”

So with the 32GB 3G version of the iPad, Apple earns more than $440 per unit. No iPad model costs Apple more than 50% of the retail price. But at the same time we have to keep in mind that Apple did a lot of research into developing the technology and software for the device. The marketing of the device costs a lot of money and all Apple’s personal have to be payed as well. So eventually the costs of each sold iPad unit will be much higher than what’s displayed below.

At least it gives you an idea of how much the iPad really costs to build and over time Apple will earn more and more with each unit being sold.

The iPad is a new device, so that means sales could go into the wrong direction. Steve Jobs is prepared to drop the price of the iPad if sales are not what he hoped for. That’s what a report from the Wall Street Journal claims. Credit Suisse analyst Bill Shope has had meetings with Apple executives and reveals that the company is leaving the doors open to price cuts on the iPad.

Shope also wrote that despite the seemingly aggressive pricing of the iPad – the lower-than-expected price points range from $499 to $829 – Apple seemed to indicate it would respond with price cuts if demand for the device wasn’t revving up the way it liked. “While it remains to be seen how much traction the iPad gets initially, management noted that it will remain nimble (pricing could change if the company is not attracting as many customers as anticipated),” Shope wrote.

The iPad will be launched late next month and the 3G model will follow in April. Official dates have still to be announced and ofcourse it remains to be seen if sales meet expectations, but at least it’s good to know a possible price cut may occur. At the same time, don’t keep your heads up too much, the price of the iPad is already pretty low and a price cut could simply mean the price will drop $20-$30 dollars.
