Missing a webcam on the iPad? There might be a nice solution soon. Although it’s still a concept, the design looks very good. The iPad Cam-Case is designed by Chet Rosales. This designer actually packed the camera in a case, so the iPad is protected as well. The camera can be used to make video-calls with VOiP-like applications like Skype.

The good thing about this design is the fact the camera is implemented into a corner, so you can use the iPad in either landscape or portrait mode. The case is made of a rubber material. There is also a port on the bottom to be able to re-charge the iPad without taking it out of the case.

What do most people miss on the iPad? I think it’s the lack of a camera/webcam. Apple could have included iChat (and maybe iMovie), so you can chat with your friends using the camera and actually seeing each other. All the while the iPad is resting on your lap without having your legs getting burned by the heat a laptop produces. The iPad stays cool (no pun intended) and is much easier to use with applications like iChat than a laptop.

Microsoft has build a prototype webcam. The Microsoft Webcam can be plugged into the iPad dock connector. Video is displayed through VGA with a 640×480 resolution. The production model should be a lot smaller then the one displayed in the picture of this article. There’s only one obstacle here: Apple. They need to approve an app that works with the webcam. So you can either use the webcam via the official ways or via a jailbreak.

Maybe one of the biggest complaints is the fact that the iPad has no camera. Apple presented the iPad as being a very cool device to show your photos on. There’s now a solution: CAMERA-A.

With this application you can make photos with your iPad via the camera of your iPhone. That’s immediately it’s weakness; you need an iPad AND an iPhone. You need to install the app on both devices. You can then connect the two devices via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. The next step is to place the iPhone on a surface and you can start making photos with your iPad. You can zoom in and out without moving your iPhone.

Apple has released the fourth beta of the iPad SDK 3.2. The previous beta was released two weeks ago. So far there have been no new discoveries. The fourth beta fixes the bookmark function in Safari. The Camera tab has been removed from the Photos applications. Many people believed this tab was the best evidence that the iPad will have a camera after all. But Apple says the following:

“The Camera tab represents photos available via the Camera Connection Kit for iPad, and is not relevant for the Simulator. The Camera tab will disappear after a few seconds.”

As a paying user of the SDK you have access to the changelog and the SDK itself via the iPhone Dev Center.

Yesterday, the iPhone SDK 3.2 has been released, and removed shortly after the discovery of an error. It could also be that Apple removed the new beta of the SDK because there are some features they didn’t want people to see yet. Luckily, a few people downloaded the SDK just in time and are now discovering new features, about the Photo app in particular. The “yes camera, no camera” story is also revived.

The three pictures above show that Apple has been busy implementing a camera in the iPad. Not only the code is referring to camera support, but also the software itself (in the form of buttons) shows that a camera is/was a part of the iPad.

The Photo app has now been added to the news SDK 3.2 beta 3 and 9to5Mac has made a video of this application. The app runs in the iPad simulator of the SDK and shows that you can separately set a wallpaper to the background and a different wallpaper to the lock screen. It also shows that you can turn the photos around with finger gestures. Take a look at the 6 minutes video:

Will the iPad get a camera after all (read The Camera Story)? A new job posting seems to confirm it. Apple is preparing the iPad for a videocamera and is seeking a quality assurance engineer for Media Systems devision. The division is part of Apple’s Interactive Media Group.

The job posting particularly focusses on iPad media and it’s the new employee’s job to test the photocamera, videocamera, audio-recording and audio playback.

“The Media Systems team is looking for a software quality engineer with a strong technical background to test still, video and audio capture and playback frameworks. Build on your QA experience and knowledge of digital camera technology (still and video) to develop and maintain testing frameworks for both capture and playback pipelines.

Familiarity with and interest in photography, video as well as media file formats is highly desirable. Experience with tuning of and image pipeline, including, but not limited to AWB, Color Correction, AutoExposure, FrameRate adjustments is a plus.”

It’s unclear whether the iPad will include a camera or not when it is released, although it looks pretty clear that the first version of the iPad will not have a camera of any sort. The camera capabilities the new employee is going to test might be for the second version. In that case we’ll probably see an iPad with camera as early as next year.

The Job description can be found at jobs.apple.com

WWDC 2009: the introduction of a new iPod touch. Well, new? Not really in my opinion. It has a faster processor, more memory and…that’s it. No new design, no extra software features and above all, no camera. Everybody expected that the third generation of the iPod touch would have a camera. The whole keynote felt like a disappointment. Maybe the iPod touch will still get a camera later this year? What does this have to do with the iPad? Well, the same thing is happening with the iPad as well.

A camera would have been a welcome addition to the iPad. With a modified version of iChat on the iPad and a monthly data plan, people would have been able to make video calls from everywhere they are. Although there’s no information about a camera on Apple’s iPad pages, there is some evidence that the iPad originally had a camera on board.

First of all there’s the leaked photos of a prototype version of the iPad. Look closely and you see a home-button on the bottom, just like the iPad shown by Steve Jobs, but there’s another notch on the top which could indicate a camera (see picture below).

There’s another piece of vague evidence provided by Steve Jobs himself. When you re-watch the first part of the keynote, at 9 minutes 22 seconds, you can see a quick glimpse of what appears to be a camera. Was Steve presenting us with the original iPad? And is the iPad shown on Apple’s website not the real one? Will we see a “one more thing” by the time the iPad is launched worldwide? Probably not, but there’s still one more piece of evidence that is the most convincing of all.

Below is a picture, taken by Mission Repair, which shows the following: top: iPad frame, middle: camera, bottom: MacBook frame. You can clearly see that the iPad frame has room for a camera.

Unfortunately Apple clearly chose not to include a camera with the iPad. It is likely they tested many other features, hardware and software, but saved a couple of those features for a future version of the iPad. The iPad will ship in March.

So we hear a lot of contradicting reports. One claims there will indeed be a camera and now Gruber says there won’t be a camera in the Apple Tablet. Other reports, with an appearance in mid-August, claimed Apple would offer two models. A model with a camera and a model without a camera.

I’m getting very very curious to what Apple will really show us in two weeks from now. What about you?
