iPad Jailbreak Already Fact [+video]

In need of a jailbreak for the iPad? Just one day after the iPad launch hackers have been successful in developing a jailbreak for the iPad. Will Strafach, of the Chronic Dev Team, has confirmed that they have obtained access to the necessary root-access on the iPad. It’s is unclear what method they used and when the jailbreak is available to the public.

A jailbreak of the iPad means that applications can be installed and used without the need of the App Store. There are probably two methods the Dev Team could have used: one userland-jailbreak called Spirit (developed by @comex) and one iBoot-based jailbreak (developed by Chronic Dev Team and Geohot).

Possible release dates could be the day firmware 3.2 becomes available for the iPhone or when the iPad 3G is released.

MuslceNerd of the iPhone Dev Team has posted a photo and video through his Twitter-account to prove that he has obtained root-access to the iPad. The jailbreak method is untethered and is based on the userland-jailbreak called Spirit, according to MuscleNerd.

Untethered-jailbreak: this is the best kind of jailbreak and doesn’t need help from other devices while booting. For an untethered-jailbreak it’s necessary that the chain or trust will be broken during the first stadium of the booting process (the bootrom).

The iPhone Dev Team, the Chronic Dev Team and @chpwn are momentarily working together to further develop the jailbreak. Take a look at the video below for more information:

Final iPhone OS 3.2 SDK Sent To Developers

Apple has sent an e-mail to developers in which they announce the Gold Master of the iPhone OS 3.2 SDK availability. The Gold Master is the version you’ll see on the iPad as well. The developers also got a new version of the iPad firmware.

As a normal user you can’t do anything with the files as long as you don’t have an iPad. The 7B367 firmware can also be downloaded from the Apple website. The documentation gives information with license agreements for the Apple software, Google Maps andYouTube application.

iPhone SDK 3.2 Beta 5 Released

Eight days after the previous release, Apple has released iPhone SDK 3.2 Beta 5 via the iPhone Dev Center. I haven’t heard or read about any significant changes in the latest update so far, but I’ll keep my eyes open as SDK users will undoubtedly report their findings.

SDK 3.2 Beta 4 Has Been Released

Apple has released the fourth beta of the iPad SDK 3.2. The previous beta was released two weeks ago. So far there have been no new discoveries. The fourth beta fixes the bookmark function in Safari. The Camera tab has been removed from the Photos applications. Many people believed this tab was the best evidence that the iPad will have a camera after all. But Apple says the following:

“The Camera tab represents photos available via the Camera Connection Kit for iPad, and is not relevant for the Simulator. The Camera tab will disappear after a few seconds.”

As a paying user of the SDK you have access to the changelog and the SDK itself via the iPhone Dev Center.

SDK 3.2: What Does It Offer For The iPad?

Yesterday, Apple announced the new SDK 3.2 at the same time they announced the iPad. PR NewsWire reports that the new SDK allows Voice over IP. This could mean that the iPad can perform phone calls over 3G networks.

“With the latest revisions Apple has made to the iPhone developer agreement and Software Development Kit, iCall for the iPhone and iPod Touch now enabled unrestricted free local and long distance calling over 3G data networks.”

This also means that the iPhone can have phone calls without AT&T charging for it. The iPad also has a microphone and speakers which allows the device to make phone calls via a VOIP application like iCall.

Other news about the SDK is stated below:

It seems the SDK allows connections with an external monitor. This support has never been allowed with the iPhone SDK , but this time it’s part of the iPad software. The iPad runs firmware 3.2 which is not available for the iPhone yet, so this could mean that the support for external displays will be available for the iPhone as well when firmware 3.2 is released.

iPad applications will be able to access a special shared directory. This directory is probably a way to sync the iWork document with a Mac or PC. iWork documents are also compatible with the iWork version for the Mac so it’s a nice option to be able to mount the iPad iWork documents to your MacBook or iMac.

The SDK also supports universal applications. Universal apps are apps that support the iPhone as well as the iPad.

Last but not least, there’s no multitasking support. This is a big disappointment to many people. Steve Jobs said that multitasking will be one of the more important features of the iPhone, when the first iPhone was introduced. Even though the third generation iPhone is still not capable of multitasking (only when you perform a Jailbreak), one would have suspected the iPad would be able to do that.
