Economic Daily News reports that a new, smaller iPad will be released before the end of the year. Sourcecode of the latest iOS 4.1-beta shows that a new iPad as well as a new iPhone is currently being tested. The fact Apple wants to release a smaller iPad, could indicate the company wants to bring a iPad-line to the market, just like the Macs.

According to the report, the new iPad will have a 7-inch touchscreen. Another report comes from DigiTimes Research and suggests Apple will also release a new 9.7-inch iPad (generation 2) in the first quarter of 2011. The iPad will likely get a Cortex A9-processor and 512 MB of memory. It will also have a IPS-screen with a resolution of 1024×768 pixels.

The current Apple A4 processor in the first generation iPad is already a very economical processor while still offering a lot of power. The Cortex A9 will be even more energy-efficient while still delivering more power then the Apple A4. Though the rumors say the A9 will likely be a multi-core processor, a single core Cortex A9 could be offering a speed up to 2 GHz. Officially the Cortex A9 will have 4 cores. With such a processor in the iPad it becomes pretty easy to perform 3D-manipulation and HD-video editing while still drawing only a small portion of power from the battery.

Soon there will be an new Apple event focussing on music. This means new iPods and other exciting announcements, but it also means it’s time for rumors. iLounge has put together a list of things Apple will soon release. All products are next generations of the iOS devices and sound very exciting so let’s have a look.

With all the negative attention the iPhone 4 is getting, will Apple release iPhone 5 earlier then expected? iLounge thinks so and says the plan is to release the iPhone 5 as soon as January! We can also expect a next generation iPod touch ofcourse, but it looks like we’ll see an iPod shuffle with a touchscreen soon as well. And the iPad isn’t even available in most countries, let alone the availability of the iPad in countries who do have the iPad, but rumors have it that Apple plans to release a 7″ iPad early next year.

Early September Event

Apple reportedly has three new models of iPods ready for release. Expect to see the new iPod touch and a new iPod nano. The third iPod will be the shuffle, which will come with a touchscreen (as was leaked not so long ago).

New iPad Already?

I’m very happy with my 9.7-inch iPad and I think it’s a perfect size. It’s not too small and not too large. Apple obviously thinks it’s necessary to release a smaller iPad. The 7-inch iPad is scheduled for launch later this year or early next year, the report says.

It’s Time For iPhone 5

If you buy an iPhone you want to proudly show its design to your friends and family. The iPhone 4, how unfortunate, needs a case to make sure the antenna isn’t blocked by its user’s fingers. The fifth generation iPhone will likely address these antenna issues. The question is, will this new iPhone be an actual new version with better hardware, or will it just be a tweak to address the antenna problems?

What do you think? Will these rumors come true or do we have to take them with a huge grain of salt?

The engraving is done with lasers and can be used to ‘print’ a personal message at the back of the music player. According to Erictric, Apple is planning to offer this option for the iPas as well.

“From what I understand, Apple’s going to be offering customers the option to get their iPads engraved just before the Holidays roll around,” the source said.

It’s unclear wether or not Apple will ask some money for this service, although it is highly likely it will be free to make the iPad even more attractive.

The update from firmware 3.2 to iOS 4 for the iPhone and iPod touch was entirely free. The update to iOS 4 for the iPad can very well be a payed version, according to an article on Stuff.tv. Several developers stated that Apple might be planning to ask some money for the future update for the iPad. According to the website it could be as much as $5.

This is a very weird decision as the update was also free for the iPod touch. The website claims they are 100% sure about the claims. It’s still a rumor though and in my opinion not true. Back in March the Software License Agreement stated that future updates would be free. At least till the next major update. Another post, by The Next Web, explains that the update will be free. So don’t worry, your money is save and you can still enjoy using multitasking and creating folders when the update comes out this fall.

The 9.7-inch iPad has been and still is a huge success. Only 10 countries currently officially have the iPad in stores. Nine more will follow this month, but according to DigiTimes Apple has ordered 5.6 and 7 inch OLED-screens at Compal Electronics. This could be an indication that we can expect two smaller iPad versions in the future. And that future seems to be very near as rumors claim these new iPad models will be released during the fourth quarter of this year.

The sources noted that Apple has recently placed new iPad orders to Taiwan-based component makers for the fourth quarter of 2010 and the first quarter of 2011 with 9.7-inch, 5.6-inch and 7-inch models all included.

The 9.7-inch model will see some minor changes, while Apple will add Chimei Innolux (CMI) as one of its panel suppliers.

The new 5.6- and 7-inch iPads will mainly target the e-book reader market, separating them from the 9.7-inch model, which mainly targets multimedia entertainment, the sources stated.

At the same time, DigiTimes casts some doubt on the rumors, because there’s an OLED-screen shortage. Samsung, the biggest OLED-screen manufacturer, can’t even keep up with demand from its own product lines. HTC even started replacing OLED for normal LCD-screens, because of that shortage. It also remains to be seen if Compal is interested in producing the new iPads given the scant profit margins.

What else can Apple produce to add to their already magnificent repertoire of products? Apparently it’s got something to do with a touch surface, gestures and magic. And no it’s not an update for the Magic Mouse. The latest rumours suggest Apple might introduce a so called Magic Trackpad.

Engadget shows pictures of the Apple trackpad. Back in February it became clear Apple had registered the name ‘Magic Trackpad‘. The trackpad looks like the one embedded in the MacBook and MacBook Pro. It also has the appearance of a Wireless Keyboard.

After the introduction of the iPhone and the iPod touch, Apple launched the Magic Mouse late last year and the iPad earlier this year. The touch technology seems to be implemented in Apple products more and more so the Magic Trackpad seems to be a logical next step. The new product can probably be linked to the computer via Bluetooth and needs two batteries.

So again, just hours before the WWDC launch, it suddenly gets extra interesting. Steve Jobs at least has my attention for today’s keynote.

Apple is pretty quiet about the iPad lately. Ofcource it’s all part of a strategy, but the people out there are dying to know a little bit more about the iPad. Internal sources have told The Examiner that Apple Store employees will get their hands on the iPad next Wednesday, March 10th.

The employees can get familiar with the device in the 16 days that follow. The source is an Apple Store manager from the southern of California who wants to remain anonymous. The March 26th launch date only counts for the Wi-Fi-only model of the iPad. The 3G version will arrive in late April.

The Examiner also explains that ads will start showing up on March 15th, showing the iPad’s e-book capability. Apple even has a special surprise for those who wait and sleep in front of its stores.

In other news, Foxconn’s suppliers have leaked information about the amounts of iPads available at launch. They say there’s no delay and Apple will receive 600.000-700.00 iPads this month. Another 1 million iPads will be delivered in April, the same sources say. There are no manufacturing problems and Apple will start selling the iPad on the date they promised.

It seems analyst Peter Misek was wrong about his claim that there will be a limited amount of iPads available at launch due to production issues. The rumours about a possible delay had something to do with the delivery of stronger glass plates for the 9,7-inch screen of the iPad. It has other demands than a notebook. The screen might not be that big, but the touchscreen is bigger than usual.

So grab your agenda’s, because it seems the iPad shows up in Apple Stores all around the world on March 26th. Will you buy the iPad?

Still 35 days to go till the iPad is launched in the stores, but pre-orders might begin one month before the release. AppAdvice claims the iPad pre-orders could start as early as February 25th. The pre-orders seem to be only for the U.S. Wi-Fi version of the iPad, but Apple hasn’t given any indication about pre-orders or an exact launch date. The only thing we know is the fact that Steve Jobs said the Wi-Fi version will be shipping in 60 days, which means the launch date is somewhere in the last week of March.

The iPad must also get FCC approval before Apple can start shipping the product. At the same time AppAdvice is not a very reliable source as they previously claimed the iPhone 3GS would have an OLED screen and FM transmitter, which we all know it didn’t get. The only thing people can do is subscribing for a newsletter to get the latest information about the iPad.

As the launch date slowly approaches, there will definitely be more information about the iPad. For instance, will the applications like weather, clock and stocks be on the iPad? And maybe there are some unannounced features showing up in the iPad simulator. The next few weeks will be exciting.

Missing Apps Come Back As Widgets?

Messages, Camera, Stocks, Weather, Voice Memos, Clock, Calculator, Compass and Phone they all have one thing in common: they are not integrated in the iPad OS. The question is: Why? Fury.com thinks they have an answer to that question: the apps will return as widgets.

According to Fury, Apple is planning to develop a Dashboard like feature for the iPad. If you have a Mac you’re probably familiar with the Dashboard. Dashboard contains all kinds of widgets. Each widget has its own task. Each widget usually has one task and gives a clear overview of its purpose, like displaying the temperatures, or showing how late it is.

There’s a table which shows the differences between the iPhone 3GS, the iPod touch and the iPad when it comes to the standard apps offered by Apple. The 3GS has all the apps and has the most to offer. The touch lacks apps like Messages, Phone and Camera, but that’s acceptable since it’s not a phone and it has no camera on board. The iPad lacks a lot of the standard apps the iPhone and iPod touch do have. The only application it does have and the others don’t, is the iBooks application.

It would be really nice if Apple adds the missing apps as widgets and enables users to download the huge amount of widgets already available for Mac users. The iPad sure allows for such an addition because of the bigger screen. No matter what Apple has in store for us, I do hope the missing apps will be available in the final version when it’s launched 52 days from now.

What do you think?

Clayton Morris of FOXNews.com claims that Apple and Verizon are still discussing the possibilities to bring the iPad to Verizon’s network. Many rumours suggested Verizon will also offer the iPad. Last Wednesday’s keynote surprised many when they saw only AT&T was announced as a cellular data provider for the iPad.

“Apple is working with Verizon on a version of its iPad tablet, despite Apple only announcing an AT&T partnership, according to Fox News Channel’s Clayton Morris, who just spoke with a Verizon source.”

No other details are given, so it’s hard to check if the iPad is really going to be offered by Verizon soon. Still, the 3G version comes unlocked so the customer can decide which carrier they want to use for their monthly data plan.
