Remember Windows 95? You probably do, even those Apple fans among us. If you want to feel Windows 95 on your iPad, @kamagames has the solution. The YouTube-video below shows the emulation of Windows 95 on the iPad.

You can immediately see the downside: the touchscreen acts as the mouse. The systems also seems to react pretty slowly. But it does seem to work properly and applications like Notepad and Minesweeper are shown.

How does it work? It seems to be an implementation of Bochs on the iPad. Bochs can run many other operating systems by emulating them. OS’s like DOS, Microsoft Windows, BSDs, Linux, Xenixm, Rhapsody, MorphOS and AmigaOS can be emulated by Bochs.

According to Steven Troughten-Smith there’s no need for a jailbreak for the emulation. You only need a developers license to be able to use Bochs on your iPad. Via Steven’s Twitter-account, he placed photos to show Microsoft Windows 1.0.1 and Apple’s Rhapsody.

iFixit bought the iPad and immediately started tearing the device down to show every single part inside and outside of the iPad. From the touchscreen to the speakers, there’s a photo of every bit of electronics. Below are some screenshots and a whole bunch of technical details.

The iPad’s battery has 5.5x the capacity of the battery in the iPhone! The iPad actually has two batteries wired in parallel, for a total of 24.8 Watt-hours.

On average, the iPad sips just 2.5 Watts. That’s 1/5 the power of a compact fluorescent bulb!

The rear case is machined from a single billet of aluminum, increasing weight but greatly improving the rigidity of the device.

The empty void in the upper right corner is where the cellular communications board would go in the 3G iPad.

The A4 is a Package-on-Package (PoP), with at least three layers of circuitry layered on top of each other. A4 is packaged just like the iPhone processors, microprocessor in one package and two memory modules in the other package. They’re all sandwiched together in a very nice and thin PoP.

The iPad RAM is INSIDE the A4 processor package. Confirming this took quite a bit of sleuthing: we had to partner with Chipworks to X-ray the processor. The X-ray revealed two layers of RAM. In addition to the ARM processor, the A4 package contains two stacked Samsung dies.

The rumored slot for a camera is actually taken up by the ambient light sensor.

The glass panel is quite thick: about 1.18 mm, compared to the iPhone’s 1.02 mm thick glass. This is necessitated by the panel’s large size.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has published a number of photos of Apple’s iPad as part of the company’s application for approval based on radiation emission requirements, Engadget reports.

“With the iPad they didn’t just bother to test out the radiation and maybe take a little peek for themselves under the covers, but instead disassembled the whole machine on camera. Unfortunately they took it upon themselves to cover over the specific chips, so we’ll have to wait for one of those pro bono teardowns to get the full lay of the land, but it’s still a unique look at the makeup of this thing.”

You can clearly see the battery being almost as wide as the device itself. Some parts are covered due to confidentiality.

click on the picture for a larger version

iFixit is doing a full analysis of the FCC images. The covered parts were actually blacked out by a layer embedded in the PDF. With some pretty simple manipulation these layers were quickly removed to reveal the “confidential” chips. It is revealed the Apple is using Toshiba Flash memory and a Broadcom BCM5973 chip. And ofcourse it is “revealed” that the iPad really uses an Apple A4 as the main processor.

TanZen, from Little White Bear Studios, is a very popular application on the iPhone. It’s a game in which you have to arrange several blocks in the correct way to make figure. The developers have announced they are developing an iPad version of the game. The experience of the iPhone game will return in the iPad version, but with better graphics and great new features. Below is the entire list of features:

New Features:

- Entirely new graphics!
Everything is new, and built from scratch. You want HD? You got it! TanZen for the iPhone clocked in at about 4.5MB. TanZen for iPad looks like it’s going to easily hit 50MB before we’re finished.

- Dramatically increased sandbox for solving puzzles!
No more cramped space. Enjoy a vast sandy background, where there’s room to explore all your puzzle solving ideas.

- Multiple sand backgrounds
In addition to the traditional TanZen background, you’ll also get a number of subtly textured backgrounds to choose from, to add a little spice to your Zen playground.

- New achievement system!
As always, all puzzles are unlocked from the start. But for every page of puzzles you finish, something fun will be unlocked!

- All the puzzles from the iPhone version, plus more!
Puzzles have been reshuffled, so you’ll get a mix of new and old puzzles throughout.

- New puzzle picker layout, showing many more puzzles per page
Easier progress tracking, with much less scrolling.

- Multiple save slots for family play
Sharing your iPad with the family? All possible options and progress are now saved per player.

- Streamlined interface for all menus and options, with everything accessible from the main screen
All options can be accessed via a single button from the puzzle or the picker screen. Everything is done through custom popups, so you will never leave your main screen. Change options, and watch the changes happen live.

- Support for left and right landscape orientations
Want your headphone jack on a particular side? You got it!

- In game iPod music picker
Enjoy the standard TanZen music, or pick your own, from inside the game.

- Hints on top
Every double tap will reveal a hint above everything else on the screen, which means no more hints hiding behind other pieces.

- Last puzzle played button
The button that returns you to the puzzle picker screen now acts as a “last puzzle” button when you’re in the puzzle picker. No matter what page you scroll to in the picker, pressing this button will open the last puzzle you had been working on.

- Optimized rotation ring
The ring has been resized to better fit the new piece sizes, and allow for easier selection of pieces that are near each other.

- Improved Masters Mode layout
The thumbnail image has been moved to top center, allowing for easier viewing, and a return to the traditional TanZen placement of the default pieces.

- Volume controls for sound effects
Full range volume control for the sounds, instead of just on/off.

- Custom, themed, popups
No more blue popup system messages. Now when you’re in TanZen, you’re really IN TanZen.

With all the news about the mythical iSlate, I thought it couldn’t hurt to post some news about the next generation iPhone. Five days ago I posted a picture with all the rumours of the Apple Tablet shown in it. They were marked from very likely to very unlikely. There’s now also an overview of all the iPhone rumours so far.

Will the iPhone 4G have a 5 megapixel camera? And what about the chance it will have a removable battery? A certain percentage of likeliness is given to every single rumour. The higher the percentage the more likely it is the iPhone 4G will have it.

For example: a glowing Apple logo on the back gets a rating of 1%, while an OLED display gets 90% likeliness. The picture below shows all the rumours so far and their ratings.

Back from the weekend and with some new stuff to report. Hope everybody had a good weekend and is ready for the next wave of Apple Tablet news. But before I start posting the news about that mythical device, I’ll start by reporting some news about iTabletFreakz.com.

The picture page is updated with some new footage. This time I posted 5 new pictures (the bottom row) on the Pictures page (now contains a total of 30 pictures). I’ll try and find some new pictures to post every now and then. There have also been a few changes to the site.

There’s now a “not-so-visible-countdown-till-the-January-Apple-Event” counter on the right side of the page above the poll. The counter counts down till the January 27th Apple Event. It’s actually butt-ugly and I think I’m going to try and find a better one, but this one will suffice for now.

UPDATE: There’s now a very beautiful counter and a more accurate one. I set the Californian (Cupertino) timezone.

The best part is the new forum I’ve added to the site. It’s completely empty ofcourse, but hopefully the community fills it with interesting things to report or just to chit-chat with each other. The forum can be found via the top menu Forum-button, but also via the first big button, right above the first post. You can’t really miss it. Just to help you out, here’s the link: Forum.

These are the changes I made during the weekend and the website now feels more complete. Somehow it feels the site is more ready for the upcoming tablet computer from Apple. Only 16 days to go!

What do you think about the changes?
