Apple has closed the online Apple Store for maintenance. The Media Event starts not long from now, and as is tradition the Apple Store is not available at the moment. Expect the store to be online again after the keynote. The reason to put the store offline is often because Apple introduces new products. After the keynote you can likely check out a video of the keynote, but you can also take a close look at the information about the new products.

Personally I’ve never had any trouble with the iPad overheating, but apparently a lot of iPad users have issues with a very hot tablet. And because of the many overheating issues, Apple has been sued in U.S. District Court in Northern California. The claim is that the iPad overheats and fails to operate properly in warm conditions.

The suit is filed in Oakland, CA, and Bloomberg reports the following:

“The iPad does not live up to the reasonable consumer’s expectations created by Apple”

“It overheats so quickly under common weather conditions”

“The iPad also turns off, sometimes after just a few minutes of use”

Have you had trouble with the iPad overheating?

Tomorrow, June 7th at 10 a.m. Pacific Time, 1 p.m. Eastern, Steve Jobs is going to launch the WWDC with his keynote. This year it seems less surprising when it comes to “what can we expect?”. The new iPhone has been leaked several times and we’ve also seen an official preview of the iPhone OS 4.0. Both product will officially be introduced and maybe launched tomorrow morning. But the WWDC is the most important event of the year for Apple, so we should be expecting a lot more. But what?

Maybe we should look in a direction most of us haven’t been looking at for quite some time. We’ve had updates of the MacBooks, the iPods and the iMacs. But what about the Mac mini? Well coincidentally, it looks like we can expect an update on the Mac mini. Although the WWDC is not the kind of place for a Mac mini update (since the event focusses on the iPhone instead, these last few years), Apple could still quietly update the Mac mini during the keynote. The DVI-output of the mini computer will probably be replaced by HDMI. It is not clear what more will be updated.

Another product with the potential to get an update is the Apple TV. Google will bring out the Google TV so it’s only logical Apple will come up with something for their TV product. Rumour goes that Apple TV will be running iPhone OS and will use online storage (in the cloud). Price? Only $99.

Okay then, the MacBook Pro deserves an update as well. I hear you thinking “huh? wasn’t the MacBook Pro updated recently?”. Yes, you’re right, but it can always need another update. The development of processor technology is rapidly rising and Apple could be introducing a new MacBook Pro with i7 and turbo boost. Intel is currently working on a 2,8 GHz Intel Core i7 processor capable of boosting the speed up to 3,46 GHz.

And what about the MacBook Air? That’s one of those products that just shouts for a new update. It’s been at least a year since the device got an update, but analyst Shaw Wu says an update for the MacBook Air can be expected in the second half of 2010, but not at WWDC.

The Mac Pro then? The last update dates back to March 2009. More than a year of chip technology development should be enough to offer some interesting new updates to the Mac Pro. Apple is likely going to use new Intel processors, based on 6-core Xeon-chips. These could be available for shipping in June.

What more can we expect? Ah yes, Apple seems to be working on a 27-inch LED Cinema Display. The product can be available for purchase in June and uses the same technology as the current 27-inch iMac. The looks of the display will be similar to the 24-inch LED Cinema Display Apple launched in 2008.

But we want more. MobileMe is expected to become a free service. People with an account for MobileMe suddenly saw the indication ‘Individual’ or ‘Family Pack’ change into ‘Full Member‘. A membership for MobileMe costs $99 per year. In return you can store up to 20GB of movies, music, files and other data. But Steve Jobs might have decided to make MobileMe a free service. The free service will have limited features and the full membership will include all features. Google offers almost all online services for free. CEO of Posterous says Apple needs to turn MobileMe into a free service to compete with Google.

And more. Mac Generation reports that Steve Jobs is likely to introduce Safari 5 and Mac OS X 10.6.4. The list below shows what will be included in Safari 5:

- Safari Reader: view articles on the web on a single, clutter-free page
- Improved performance. 25% faster Javascript, Better caching and DNS pre-fetching
- Bing Search Option
- Improved HTML 5 support
- Safari Developer Tools
- Smart Address field
- Tab settings
- Hardware acceleration for Windows

And more. A new iPhone. What?!?! That’s surprising. Not!!!! Since the first iPhone was launched back in 2007, Apple has released a new version of that product each year. And every time at the WWDC of that year. This year will be no different. The iPhone 4.0 (or HD or whatever) will be introduced tomorrow. We’ve even seen the new model several times. Apple “lost” it, they say. To me it feels like another way of marketing. The difference between this year and previous years is the fact that the new iPhone will have a different look. It might also be available right after the keynote on June 7th, says Mashable.

We’ve seen a preview of iPhone OS 4.0 several weeks ago, but we’ll probably see more of the new operating system at the WWDC. It’s also tradition to release a new version soon after the WWDC. I’m very curious to see what mighty Steve will show us. A while ago he said “you won’t be disappointed“.

As you probably know Apple has developed a special version of iWork for the iPad. The applications Keynote, Numbers and Pages are available in the App Store [link] for $9,99 each. It seems these applications are so popular that estimations show Apple could potentially earn $40 million each year.

According to Business Insider, Apple has earned $3 million with the iWork applications for the iPad. This means Apple could easily become the most successful iPad-developer. It also could mean that iPad users are searching for serious productivity software for the iPad. It certainly becomes very interesting for Microsoft and Google to also develop something big for the iPad.

Now, how did Business Insider come to these conclusions? Their estimations are based on the fact that the most successful iPad-apps are sold 7.500 times on Saturday and Sunday and 2.500 times on business days. All iWork applications have been in the Top 10 list from the start. This mean Apple sells 27.500 copies of Pages, Numbers and Keynote every week or $825,000 per week. These numbers do suggest they will stay the same these following months and only the future will tell.

Apple has officially announced that pre-orders for all iPad models will be taken in nine countries on Monday, May 10th. The launch day will be Friday, May 28th.

Apple today announced that iPad will be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK on Friday, May 28. Customers can pre-order all iPad models from Apple’s online store in all nine countries beginning on Monday, May 10. In the US, Apple has already sold over one million iPads and customers have downloaded over 12 million apps from the App Store, as well as over 1.5 million ebooks from the new iBookstore.

There is a different pricing for the iPads depending on where you live. It is wise to check you country’s Apple Store for pricing information. As an example, the UK iPad prices start at £429 for the 16GB iPad, £499 for the 32GB and £599 for the 64GB model. All prices include VAT and 3G-capable models will be offered at a £100 extra.

But when can you expect the iPad when you don’t live in any of the before mentioned countries? Well, if you live in the Netherlands (like me), then you can expect the iPad to arrive in July! That’s a pretty long wait in my opinion and I don’t know if it’s worth the wait as I expect the second generation iPad to arrive in January next year.

The next round of international releases will occur in the following countries in July: Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore. Prices and official dates will be announced at a later date.

In just 28 days Apple sold one million iPads since the launch of the Wi-Fi models in early April. The report also says users downloaded over 12 million apps and over 1.5 million eBooks during the same time.

“One million iPads in 28 days — that’s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Demand continues to exceed supply and we’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers.”

Earlier last month Apple announced that it had sold 300,000 iPads on the launch day of the Wi-Fi models.

What a shame, what a shame! The January 27th keynote of the iPad was promising and Apple said we can expect the iPad worldwide in March. It turned out it was a U.S.-only launch and the launch was delayed. New launch: April 3rd. A handful of countries around the world would follow late April.

Yesterday, Apple announced the worldwide release (Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK) and unfortunately the launch is delayed…again.

“Although we have delivered more than 500,000 iPads during its first week, demand is far higher than we predicted and will likely continue to exceed our supply over the next several weeks as more people see and touch an iPad. We have also taken a large number of pre-orders for iPad 3G models for delivery by the end of April.”

Due to high demand Apple decided to delay the worldwide launch another month. Pre-orders will start on May 10th and prices will be announced then as well. The official worldwide launch will take place at the end of May.

All apps with “Pad” in their title will be rejected by Apple. There are certain guidelines that do allow the word “Pad”. For instance: “Cool Wallpapers for iPad” is allowed, but “ContactPad” will immediately be rejected. Jesse Waites, developer of ContactPad [App Store, $1,99] has published this issue.

He got an email from Apple in which Apple explained why his app was rejected. The same policy is used for words like “Pod” and “iPod”. Take a look at the ‘Guidelines for Using Apple’s Trademarks and Copyrights’. You will see that Apple-productnames are allowed, but only in combination with “runs on”, “for use with”, “for” or “compatible with”.

Version 1.0 of ContactPad can still be found in the App Store. See the email below:

Advertising firm Chitika estimates over 500,000 iPads have been sold. They’ve calculated the number of iPad accessing the Internet via Safari based on unique hits to its network of advertisements.

Some users are not accessing the web every day. On Monday, Chitika registered nearly 270,000 iPads while Apple officially announced they’d sold more than 300,000 iPads on launch day.

“We’ve also learned that the WiFi iPad may not be seen as primarily an Internet surfing device. With estimates of over 300,000 iPads sold on release day and perhaps as many as 700,000 sold over the weekend, that only around 40% are showing up on the Internet may imply that people are buying the iPad for the apps, and spending most of their browsing time in the App Store.”

It’s obvious that the iPad is already a huge success and still growing. With the late April launch in a handful of other countries and the launch of 3G in the U.S., it will just be a matter of weeks before the magical 1,000,000 sold units has been reached.
