Apple Tablet Computer Not For Books, But For Video?

This news has been on the web for almost two weeks. I must have overlooked it. Almost every rumor about the Apple Tablet talks about the way the device will cause a revolution to the market of print media. This time the rumor says the device might be more suited for video.

This is the conclusion drawn by Brainstorm Tech after a conversation analyst Mike Abramsky had with Apple employees Peter Oppenheimer (CFO), Eddy Cue (vice president for iTunes and Internet services) and David Moody (vice president for worldwide Mac marketing). One of the things they spoke about was where Apple sees a future in digital content and where not.

Video/Content Opportunities. After music, video content is expected to be the next “exploding” opportunity, but requires overcoming industry rights dysfunctionality, competing with subsidies (cable box, video), and developing the right consumer “offer”. Apple TV, while still a “hobby”, is well positioned to benefit from evolving market dynamics. Apple was less enthusiastic about the online book/newspaper market, given unattractive industry structure.”

Other interesting statements during this conversation were about the iPhone. Apple says they are not afraid of devices like Android, because the iPhone benefits from the iTunes-system. The Apple employees also say that developers preferably develop for the iPhone, because Android runs on many different devices. And last but not least, the arrival of Windows 7 is a chance for Apple to sell more Macs.
